PUBLIC INFORMATION STATEMENT
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE TALLAHASSEE FL
507 AM EDT Tue Oct 15 2013
TO: Emergency management officials, news media, and other users.
Effective at 1200 UTC (7 am EST) on Tuesday, February 25, 2014,
the National Weather Service in Tallahassee will change the
reporting of observations for the stream gage at Lamont on the
Aucilla River from a stage value in feet above gage zero (the gage
datum) to an elevation height given in feet above the National
Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929 (NGVD29). This change will match
with the observational data reported by the United States Geologic
Survey.
Because of this change, starting on Tuesday, February 25, 2014,
every observation appearing on the Advanced Hydrologic Prediction
Service or AHPS for the Aucilla River at Lamont will be 42.9 feet
higher than it would be if the height were provided in the gage
zero datum.
Additionally, the minor flood stage for the Aucilla River at
Lamont is also being increased an additional 2.1 feet at the time
of this datum change to better match with flood impacts along the
river.
Changing the reporting observations to height above NGVD29 require
modification of the moderate and major flood stages for the
Aucilla River at Lamont. The new flood categories for the Aucilla
River at Lamont will be:
1. Action stage of 52.0 feet above NGVD29. The previous action
stage was 9.0 feet above gage zero.
2. Minor flood stage of 54.0 feet above NGVD29. The previous minor
flood stage was 9.0 feet above gage zero.
3. Moderate flood stage of 57.0 feet above NGVD29. The previous
moderate flood stage was 14.0 feet above gage zero.
4. Major flood stage of 63.0 feet above NGVD29. The previous major
flood stage was 20.0 feet above gage zero.
These changes for the Aucilla River at Lamont are a direct result
of coordination between the National Weather Service in Tallahassee,
the emergency management agencies in Taylor, Jefferson, and
Madison Counties as well as the Suwannee River Water Management
District to improve flood forecast and warning services for the
Aucilla River.
